We humans can be a strange bunch sometimes. We have technology that could be considered magic even just a few decades ago, and yet sometimes we prefer solutions our ancestors would've used. This is, at least, what happens with traditional medicine and alternative and homemade remedies. No matter how much science and technology advance, homemade and natural remedies will always play a big role in our health and well-being.
In recent times, the popularity of natural and alternative remedies has increased notably. This is thanks in no small part to this new "natural" lifestyle fad we're going through: Alternative medicine, many different diets and exercise routines -like yoga, for example-, the huge increase in popularity of organic foods; suddenly, we became obsessed with being more "natural", more healthy.
Natural remedies have been around since forever and they will continue to be, no matter how much medical science advances, and there's a very simple reason for that: Because the work. Natural remedies are possibly the oldest kind of knowledge we humans have as species.
Here are four excellent homemade skin care recipes you can use to take care of your skin in a natural and easy way with ingredients you likely have in your own kitchen.
Facial Scrub
  • 3 tablespoons fresh cream
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • ½ cup ground almonds
  • 1 tablespoon almond oil
Mix every ingredient perfectly. Apply the mixture to your dry face in a circular motion. Wash your face off with warm water, followed by cold water. Pat your face dry. Place in a jar and store in your refrigerator for future use.
Anti-Acne Facial Mask
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 tablespoon almond oil
  • ½ of an avocado
Mix every ingredient together until it forms a puree. Carefully apply to your face, having previously cleaned it. Leave it on for 10 or 15 minutes before cleaning it off. Do this twice a day, every day.
  • ½ cup fine sugar
  • 2 tablespoons almond oil
  • 1 bar of neutral soap
Mix the sugar and the almond oil. Then, work up a lather with the neutral soap, and add one tablespoon of the almond oil and sugar mixture to your foamy hands. Use that mixture to thoroughly clean your whole body. It is especially useful for your face, arms, neck and shoulders.
Anti-Age Treatment
  • 1 tablespoon lanolin
  • 2 tablespoons almond oil
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 2 tablespoons cod liver oil
  • 1 tablespoon chamomile tea
Mix and carefully heat up the almond oil and lanolin. Stir them constantly in order to prevent scorching, turn the heat down immediately if you notice it. Add the water to the mixture to cool it. Wait until it is cool enough for you to touch it until proceeding. Combine everything with the rest of the ingredients, the result will be a light brown, creamy lotion that can be stored in the plastic bottle when not in use. Carefully massage it into the face at least once a day.
